New York’s many diverse clubs have each contributed to the history of squash in New York, starting with the three clubs that came together to found NY Squash in 1924: The University Club of New York, The Rockaway Hunting Club, and Montclair Athletic Club, and later that year The Racquet and Tennis Club and The Harvard Club of New York. Club histories are included as we receive them.

The Printing House Fitness & Squash Club

The building that housed the club was built in 1911, and originally used by printing companies. It was converted to residential apartments in 1975, and offered racquetball, American squash courts and a fitness center. In the mid/late 1990s the 20’ American courts were converted to 5 International 21’ softball squash courts. The club became an important part of the shift from the American style hardball court to international softball courts. Although the club had a vibrant and very convivial membership it closed in 2011, after the building’s new ownership leased out the space and the courts were taken down. The Club’s legacy lives on in the form of Open Squash, founded by former Printing House members.

The Racquet and Tennis Club

The Racquet and Tennis Club - often referred to as "The R&T" - is a private athletic and social club located at 370 Park Avenue between 52nd/53rd streets. The club's roots date back to 1876, and the current clubhouse was designed in 1918 by the fabled firm of McKim, Mead and White. The R&T contains four singles squash courts and one doubles squash court, in addition to one racquets court and two court tennis courts. The club has been instrumental in the local, regional and national squash scene, including hosting the first ever collegiate squash match where Harvard defeated Yale 4-1 in February 1923.

SquashRx

SquashRx was started in 2013 at a single court in MIdtown at 70 West 36th Street originally built by the avid player and patron of squash, Stephen L. Green. The program was initially aimed at giving competitive juniors more access to court time and coaching. Through word of mouth it soon became clear that people of all ages and ability levels were looking for more opportunities to play squash. SquashRx's unique open reservation model followed and their second facility opened at 160 Broadway in the Financial District in 2019. In 2023 a New Canaan location was launched at the 4-court St. Luke's School squash facility. SquashRx currently serves thriving junior and adult communities and hopes to continue to help grow the sport of squash in NYC and beyond.
