Singles League Captain Responsibilities

Set Up Your Team

  • Let the NY Squash know your intent to captain a team by the Team Registration Deadline listed on the Overview page, Season Specifics section at the top. To register a team, submit the Team Registration Form with the details of your team. You must be a Member of US Squash to register a team.

  • Attend the Captain's Meeting typically in mid-October. See the Overview page, Season Specifics section for the current season calendar.

  • We will notify you once your team is created, and you must fill in your roster online, with a minimum of at least eight players registered by the Roster Minimum deadline. Of those eight, only one may be a sub from a lower level team. You may add additional players during the season. NOTE: In order for you to add players to your team roster, they must be US Squash members.

Reserve Courts

  • Coordinate with your club pro or club staff to reserve courts for all home matches once the schedule is published. The match schedule will be published in mid October and play begins at the end of October, but it’s recommended to start planning with your club ASAP to ensure court booking will go smoothly.

  • The Home captain is responsible for making sure courts are booked and arranging for payment if applicable.

Organize Your Roster

  • Players must be current, paid US Squash in the New York District to compete. Remind your players to renew memberships throughout the season. If a player participates in a match with an expired membership it will be recorded as a Default.

  • A player may sub up for a higher-level team (or teams) up to three matches per season. On the fourth match, the player becomes ineligible for his or her original team going forward. (Exception: a woman may play on both a women's team and a men's team.)

  • Maintain an active roster with enough players ready to play every week. Have alternates available in case of last-minute schedule changes or injury.

Coordinate Matches

  • Each week, the Home captain should email the visiting captain to confirm court times and lineups. You should do this at least four days in advance of each match. You can find opposing captains' contact information on ClubLocker or in each division’s Division Info Pack.

  • No reschedules are allowed. Due to court constraints and players' busy schedules, matches must be played on the assigned night.

  • Defaults: any team with three ‘team defaults' (where two or more players default in one night) may be expelled.

Play Matches, Report Scores

  • Home Captains supply new balls for matches.

  • All matches are scored PAR-11 (Point a Rally, to 11 points), best of five games.

  • Call a referee if needed. Referees can make matches more fun. Hey, even the pros use them.

  • Once scores are entered, the opposing captain must confirm the result or alter for accuracy. If results are altered, the originating captain must then confirm. Score disputes should be brought to the Division Coordinator’s attention.

Know the Rules

  • Review the league rules. Rules keep squash a game of courtesy and honor. Also, following these rules ensures that the league is fair and fun for everyone.

  • Ensure your players follow the rules. If a player is showing up late, not calling lets/clearing/giving strokes, or not wearing protective eyewear, address the player to maintain fair play. During matches, captains are responsible for the conduct of their players both on and off the court.
