Forty-Five Years Later: A Look Back At NY Squash’s Tumultuous Summer Of 1979

It was a fraught summer of 1979 when NY Squash stepped up over the escalating controversy of the official national rankings and choice of players on Team USA. At stake was both the historical record and more pressingly who would represent the country at the biennial, World Team Championships to be held in Australia in Autumn 1979. When the national rankings and team were announced by US Squash (then US Squash Racquets Association, USSRA) there was an immediate outcry, especially among supporters of the top NY based players, who felt they and others were significantly under-ranked. Rob Dinerman’s article below revisits NY Squash’s publication of an alternate set of rankings, and the tumult and aftermath that followed on the national squash scene.
